A bit of strappy bondage from "Legend of the Seeker," already airing in most US markets.
Part of my rationale for creating the Slavegirls in Sword and Sandal/Sorcery Movies section is that there are a hell of a lot of sword and sandal and sword and sorcery movies coming down the pike. So I've created this list of all the upcoming movies and TV series I've found news of on the Web. Since the news stories are reporting on projects in various stages of development ... i.e., some are sure things, others may never see the light of day ... I'll try to give a brief explanation of the projected completion date of each project and its current status if known.
I'm relying for these items on news stories of varying degrees of unreliability, i.e., some are little better than gossip. This should not be taken as an authoritative list, but a casual survey of what's out there. Because that's what it is. I'll provide a link to the websites/blogs that describes each project so you can read the story and evaluate it for yourself. Also so you'll know I'm not spinning this stuff up out of thin air.
The Sword and Stuff News
This sword and sandal TV series is already complete and is currently airing its first season of syndicated programming. The link leads to the official website. You can watch all past episodes of the show at the website.
Krod Mandoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire
This Comedy Central parody of sword and sorcery flicks is completed and is set to premiere on Comedy Central on April 9 at 10 pm EST. Link leads to the official website.
This sword and sandal epic about a lost Roman legion is in production and scheduled for completion in 2009. Casting has already begun so money is being spent, hence it's likely to see completion, though not an absolute sure thing. Link leads to IMDB listing.
This movie is in production and scheduled for a 2010 release. Rose McGowan and Robert Rodriguez have been hyping it heavily, but I haven't seen any evidence that anyone has spent serious money on it yet, so I'd categorize it as "iffy." Link leads to IMDB listing.
This sequel to the 1980 film "Hawk the Slayer" is in production. The lead has been cast but there are no other signs that it will be completed, so it's another "iffy" one. Link leads to the production company's listing for the film.
The Denver Post has an article claiming that the director of Kung-Fu Panda has been signed to do a reboot of He Man: Master of the Universe, the inane cartoon sword and sorcery series from the 1980s. I've seen no sign other than gossip that the movie will get made, so color it very iffy. Link leads to Denver Post article.
Shine Pictures has fast-tracked a production called 1066, about the Battle of Hastings in that year. There are already commitments for financing and distribution, and the scriptwriter for "Gladiator" has been hired to write the script. Looks like it has a very good chance of actually being produced. Link leads to Variety article.
This sequel to the 1982 film "The Sword and the Sorcerer" is in production and is scheduled for a 2009 release date. It's very likely to be completed, as filming is either in progress or has been completed. Link leads to some vidcaps from the film that were leaked to "Ain't It Cool News."
Director Tarsem Singh is promoting a project called "War of the Gods" about conflict between Theseus and imprisoned Titans. A lead has been cast, but I haven't seen any other sign of movement on the project, so I'd call it very iffy. Link leads to an EmpireOnline article about Singh and "War of the Gods."
Lawrence Kasdan has written the script, Louis Letterier, the director of the Incredible Hulk movie has been signed to direct, and Sam Worthington has been signed as the lead. Money is being spent on this one. It's chances look very good. Link leads to an article on Screenrant.
Scarlett Johansson is rumored to have accepted the lead for "Amazon Warrior" an "in-production" film about female gladiators. It probably isn't a remake of the horrible 1998 film of the same name. The production has been in development hell for several years, hence very, very iffy, but come on! Scarlett Johannson! Gladiatrix! Link leads to an article on Film Junk.
That's all I have for now, but watch this space for new projects as they appear ... and I probably don't have all the current projects listed.
